Amish recipe for making white bread (and something sweet)
This is the recipe for a somewhat sweet bread, surely not a bread to make every day (because of the amount of sugar it has), but to brighten up your life, from time to time.

It combines very well with sweet and savory flavors.

It is a delicious bread!

Ingredients:

  • 235 ml of lukewarm water (about 45º C)
  • 60 gr white sugar
  • 9 gr of yeast for bread (not “Royal” type)
  • 5 grams of salt
  • 30 ml of sunflower oil (and a little more to grease the pan)
  • 410 g wheat flour

Preparation:

  1. In a bowl, put the water, which should be at about 45ºC, and dissolve the sugar in it.
  2. Add the yeast and stir. Leave it for a few seconds until it makes a kind of foam.
  3. Add the salt.
  4. Add the oil.
  5. We add the flour, little by little and stirring all the time.
  6. Knead until the dough is smooth.
  7. We take a mold (in my case I used a long one) and we grease it with a little oil.
  8. We put the bread in the mold, we adapt it to the shape and we turn it over (so that it has oil on both sides).
  9. Let it ferment in a warm place for about one hour (if it is cold where we live, we can use the oven at about 30ºC).
  10. After the first fermentation, we will make the dough go down giving it on the surface with our fingers.
  11. Let it ferment for another 30 minutes. If we were using the oven for the fermentation we will remove the dough from the oven before preheating the oven for baking.
  12. Preheat the oven to 200ºC.
  13. Put the bread in and immediately lower the temperature to 180ºC.
  14. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and let it rest on a rack until cool.
